For many Nepalese families in California, Dashain is the most anticipated time of the year. Thousands of miles from Nepal, the festival takes on a special significance — it becomes not just a celebration but an act of cultural preservation.
Each year, UNC organizes a community-wide Dashain celebration that brings hundreds of families together. The sound of Nepali music fills the air, the aroma of traditional food brings back memories of home, and the tika ceremony connects generations in a beautiful chain of blessings.
What makes these celebrations powerful is their ability to introduce the festival to children who have never experienced Dashain in Nepal. For them, UNC's Dashain celebration IS their Dashain memory. These shared experiences create a foundation of cultural identity that children carry with them throughout their lives.
As our community grows, so does the importance of these gatherings. They remind us that no matter how far we are from Nepal, the spirit of Dashain — family, togetherness, and new beginnings — travels with us.
